PUBLIC mode
When PUBLIC mode is enabled (via configuration page) RADIUS behaves differently. All failed authentications will be accepted and assigned predefined set of RADIUS attributes if they match one or more of selected reason like:
- service not found (missing or unknown username)
- wrong password
- service disabled (suspended, expired, time/GB limit reached etc.)
- other (host error, port limit reached, no free ip etc.)
All successful authentications will behave normally while PUBLIC mode is enabled.
PUBLIC mode sessions will last only while mode is enabled. Once you disable it, sessions will be disconnected using CoA requests shortly after.
PUBLIC mode is very useful during maintenance or crisis handling when you want to authenticate all requests regardless of problems like:
- Host server is down or unreachable so RADIUS can't get service data
- Service data itself is wrong or missing
- Requests with non existing usernames
Alternatively you can use it to provide anonymous access to clients without active service so they can make order or top-up.
There are limitations to PUBLIC mode:
- You can only assign one set of RADIUS reply attributes for all sessions.
- There are no IP pools, so you have to configure NAS local pool and use Framed-Pool attribute to assign IP. You have to configure routes correctly to provide (limited) Internet access.
- All sessions are anonymous so usage will not be counted to any particular service. Login username will be shown in online report but there will be no attached service.
- PUBLIC mode sessions have no mode changes (unlike NORMAL, SPECIAL or LIMITED modes of normal sessions). Rate limiting or session timeout must be set using RADIUS reply attributes.
